Hi, guys! It’s Tolu, with another blog post – and happy April Fools’ Day! Now, I don’t know if you guys take part in April Fools’ Day or not – I guess I used, to, but no most years I don’t even realise until I randomly see the date and then I just shrug and carry on with my life (but I guess that’s just me!). Anyway, make sure you tell me what pranks you did (or adversely, what pranks were pulled on you!) in the comment section below.
First of all, a bit of the history about April Fools’ Day (cue collective groan). Unsurprisingly, the origin of April Fools’ Day is still a bit of a mystery (who would have even though of a day filled with people playing pranks on each other?!) There are several theories, however (and here’s a direct quote from wonderopolis.org as I can’t be asked to type it out in my words!):
‘Some believe the first association between April 1 and playing tricks can be found in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales from 1392. In “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale,” a fox tricks proud rooster Chauntecleer on syn March bigan thritty dayes and two. Although Chaucer probably meant 32 days after March (May 2), many readers apparently misunderstood the line to mean March 32 — or April 1.
Others believe that April Fools’ Day was the result of a desire to celebrate the turning of the seasons around springtime. In fact, many cultures have historically held such celebrations around the beginning of April. For example, the ancient Romans had a festival named Hilaria on March 25. The Hindus celebrate Holi, and the Jews celebrate Purim around this time of year.’
Still others believe April Fools’ Day got its start because of the adoption of a new calendar in 1582. Many ancient cultures celebrated New Year’s Day around April 1.’
In short, no-one actually knows why – and hey why not leave it a mystery? I have to say, why not have a day that encourages you to play harmless pranks on other people? Now, that we’ve got the history part sorted, I’m going to review today’s top 5 April Fools’! (Post your faves in the comment section!)
1. Jack Wills Colour Rebranding Okay, I’m going to admit this one caught me a little – but only for a second! This morning, Jack Wills’ instagram posted a picture of their iconic pink and blue stripes – but instead in a horrifying yellow and black version, with the message : ‘We’re pleased to announce that we’re overhauling our branding with immediate effect. Read the full press release -> blog.jackwills.com. Scary, huh? Luckily, the store posted another picture a couple hours later revealing that it was all an April Fools’ joke!2. Youtube’s Darude – Sandstorm Search Response and Music Button To be honest, this one made me laugh more than it made me be tricked. If you don’t know what the whole Darude – Sandstorm thing is, I’m summarise it pretty quickly for you – basically a couple of years ago on Youtube, this guy put this song in his video (called Sandstorm by Darude) and everyone was asking what song it was, and soon the song went viral for some reason (mainly because Youtube is an extremely weird place). So now, commonly if you ask what song is in the video in the comments, there is bound to be someone who will type ‘Darude – Sandstorm.’ I know, it’s a weird story – but that’s how the internet works, my friend. In addition, Youtube put a button on all videos (I think it only works on computers though) where if you click the little music icon next to the watch later and settings button, it plays an excruciatingly-loud and even more annoying snippet of the infamous song. Gotta love Youtube, eh?3. Cern confirms the existence of The Force Finally, an April Fools’ for all our you science fans out there! Cern, which the biggest European Organisation for Nuclear Research (and also operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world) announced today, that they had confirmed the existence of The Force (a binding, metaphysical, and ubiquitous power in the fictional universe of the Star Wars galaxy created by George Lucas). Check out the article in this link: http://home.web.cern.ch/about/updates/2015/04/cern-researchers-confirm-existence-force4. Sam Smith comes out as straight The singer, who came out as gay last year, posted this cheeky tweet this morning.5. Reverse April Fools’ I honestly think this is the best thing I’ve read in my life. So basically, a car dealership in New Zealand put an ad in the paper claiming that the first person to come in and “ask for Tom” would be able to swap their old car for a new BMW. A woman called Tiaana Marsh took up their generous offer – and it ended up paying off very well her, as she is pictured with her brand new BMW in the video below.Anyway, that’s it for today! See you next time on Totally Tolu – and don’t forget to post your favourite April Fools’ pranks in the comments below!
